讲座内容简介:

The aim of the seminar is to explore the prospects of the Renminbi (RMB) as an emerging global public good within the International Monetary System (IMS). As China's economic influence continues to expand, the RMB is increasingly seen as a contender capable of challenging the US dollar's dominance and fostering a more multipolar financial architecture. This could potentially lead to greater stability, more equitable access to foreign reserves, and enhanced international cooperation, significantly improving the global economic landscape.

The presentation will delve into the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that define international money and the contemporary IMS, with a focus on the preconditions necessary for gaining international money status. Utilizing current data, indicators will demonstrate how well China meets the prerequisites for currency internationalization and the progress achieved so far. Despite rapid advances over the past decade, the RMB's journey towards internationalization remains in its early stages, particularly struggling with achieving capital account openness and developing deep and robust financial markets.

A SWOT analysis will be conducted to assess the multifaceted present internal and external factors influencing the RMB internationalization process, summarizing the existing opportunities and risks. The seminar will conclude with strategic recommendations, suggesting that China should maintain its unique approach to currency internationalization, prioritizing the use of the RMB in international trade invoicing and settlement first. Such a strategy reflects a pragmatic progression, acknowledging both the opportunities available to the RMB and the challenges it must steer.
